Massey Energy and Cliffs Natural Resources are cutting coal production and laying off almost 600 employees in West Virginia because of market conditions.
Cleveland-based Cliffs said Friday it's idled the Green Ridge No. 1 Mine indefinitely and plans idle its Pinnacle mine for two months beginning Monday. Green Ridge had recalled about 300 miners in March after an earlier shutdown. Cliffs says approximately 290 employees at the Wyoming County mines and a preparation plant are being laid off.
Separately, Richmond, Va.-based Massey told television station WSAZ it idled the Black Castle surface mine in Boone County and laid off 300 people Thursday.
Massey operates mines in West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky. Cliffs mines coal in West Virginia and Alabama and iron ore elsewhere.
